The main causes are related to autoimmune and neoplastic pathology. However, it might be caused due to a long-term topical exposure (iodine solution dressing) or by intravenous administration of iodine-containing substances. Both clinical and laboratory ...
متن کاملCase Report: Atrial Fibrillation After Intravenous Administration of Iodinated Contrast Medium in a Patient With Hepatocellular Carcinoma
We describe the case of a 73-year-old woman with liver cirrhosis and hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) who developed 2 distinct episodes of paroxystic atrial fibrillation (AF) each of which occurred 1 to 4 hours after iodine medium contrast-enhanced computed tomography. Sinus rhythm was restored by amiodarone therapy after the first AF episode and by electrical cardioversion after the second one. ...
متن کاملEffects of chronic iodine administration on thyroid status in euthyroid subjects previously treated with antithyroid drugs for Graves' hyperthyroidism.
In view of the adverse effects of the administration of pharmacological quantities of iodine to euthyroid patients with a history of a wide variety of thyroid disorders, it has been suggested that iodine-containing medications and radioopaque dyes containing iodine should be avoided, if possible, in patients with underlying thyroid disease. We have now prospectively studied the effects of pharm...
متن کاملIodine excess and hyperthyroidism.
150 microg iodine are daily required for thyroid hormone synthesis. The thyroid gland has intrinsic mechanisms that maintain normal thyroid function even in the presence of iodine excess. Large quantities of iodide are present in drugs, antiseptics, contrast media and food preservatives. Iodine induced hyperthyroidism is frequently observed in patients affected by euthyroid iodine deficient goi...
